DALLAS CONTRACTORS WIN ON THE JOBSITE AND ON THE FIELD WITH MAKITA AND THE COPA MAKITA SOCCER TOURNAMENT

OCTOBER 1, 2007 – La Mirada, CAMakita has long offered solutions for professional contractors on jobsites across the US with its line of high quality power tools and accessories. Now the company is taking the field with Copa Makita, a two-day soccer tournament and fiesta in Dallas featuring teams of local contractors competing for prizes and a chance have their team’s name etched on the Copa Makita Cup.  The event takes place on October 6 and 7, 2007, at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster near Dallas.

Local contractors, including painters, framers, drywallers and masons, will form teams and compete in the two-day competition. Two teams will advance to the tournament final on October 11 at PizzaHutPark, home of Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas.

The two-day tournament will be punctuated by a Fiesta Makita, an array of attractions featuring food, music, merchandise, games, and more. Sponsors include Monster Energy Drink, Chevy, Western Union, Dr. Pepper, and others. The event will draw friends and family of competing players, as well as soccer fans from the community at large.

Makita, the official tool sponsor of Major League Soccer, is presenting the Dallas-area Copa Makita Tournament in conjunction with partner FC Dallas.  For Makita, the Copa Makita tournament and the sport of soccer are natural links to an important part of the US construction industry.

“We meet pro tradesman on jobsites and at MLS matches across the country,” said Ken Hefley, vice president of marketing for Makita. “There are plenty of tool-using contractors who are also serious soccer players on the weekends. Copa Makita gives these tool-using pro’s a chance to take the field in a tournament-style competition against their peers.”

Copa Makita’s bracket-style format will feature 32 teams competing for an opportunity to play in the final match at Pizza Hut Park. Competition is limited to local construction trades, and Dallas-area Makita retailers helped spread the word among their customers to form teams and enter the tournament. All 32 spots in the Copa Makita brackets have been filled.

Each player on the winning team will receive a Makita LCT400W Combo Kit, a four-piece cordless tool kit featuring Makita’s breakthrough 18 volt LXT Lithium-Ion battery technology. Winning team members will also receive four tickets to a catered suite at Pizza Hut Park for a future FC Dallas match, as well as a case of Monster Energy Drink.

Copa Makita is part of Makita’s ongoing initiative to engage Hispanic contractors, who account for nearly 25% of the US construction workforce (PewHispanicCenter). This industry segment is important in terms of tool-buying power, as well as its contribution to the construction industry.

“With our sponsorship of soccer, we use the excitement and energy of the sport as a meaningful way to connect with professional tool users,” said Hefley. “Makita’s sponsorship of Major League Soccer takes our participation in the sport to the national level, while our Copa Makita tournament lets us engage contractors at the local level.”

In addition to MLS, Makita is also a sponsor of the Mexican National Soccer Team during its 2007 tour of the US.
